Early spring canoeing on the Lower French River can be dangerous due to water levels being particularly high. There may be rapids in locations not on The French River map and true rapids on the map can be extremely hazardous.
The characteristics of The French River can change remarkably as the water level rises. Please be aware that normally calm water can become raging when the water is abnormally high following spring runoff. Canoeists may experience currents as being "heavy" in some areas and only skilled kayakers or canoeists whose craft are supported by flotation bags should attempt to paddle the river.
Normally calm stretches of The French River can become turbulent and dangerous at the spring flood stage. Campsites can be underwater in low-lying areas and debris can float by making it difficult to navigate. Upstream from falls (including Dallas Falls) become extremely dangerous because the force of currents forcing their way by rocks and obstructions which create powerful and dangerous surface conditions. Before making your way out to canoe The French River, please be aware of high level water conditions.
